Program Tracks

Students who have passed GRMN0300 and anyone with advanced German skills qualify and are encouraged to participate in the Language, Culture & Politics program.  Students in this track may extend their stay in Berlin through mid-July by taking courses at the Humboldt University.

Students with only one semester of German before beginning the program, choose from one of these three tracks:

Academics in Berlin

All programs begin with an intensive orientation that includes sessions on university living, city living and the German language. During the semester, students choose courses taught by local faculty, while receiving personalized academic support from IES staff and tutors.

Housing in Berlin

Students choose from living in a studio, in shared mixed-gender apartments with other IES Abroad Berlin students or with locals. Once accepted into the program IES will reach out with detailed information about these options.

Interested in studying in southern Germany?

Freiburg is known for its sustainability, tree-lined streets, and vibrant bike culture, creating an energetic and student-friendly atmosphere. The lively city center is filled with charming cobblestone streets, cafés, and local shops. Located right in the heart of the city, the university offers plenty of spaces to connect and study, including the library and the student cafeteria.

Program Tracks

Are you interested in focused attention to improving your German skills? Have you passed GRMN0300 or the equivalent?  You qualify for the Freiburg Language Area Studies program! This will allow you to extend your stay in Freiburg until mid-July and direct enroll in the university if you wish. Alternatively, you are also welcome to enroll in either of the two program tracks listed below.

Are you a German language beginner? Have you taken GRMN0100 or the equivalent? You qualify for these two programs:

Academics at the University of Freiburg

All programs begin with an intensive language orientation. During the semester, students can choose from 5 to 6 carefully selected courses taught by passionate faculty, while receiving personalized academic support for both IES Abroad and university classes from both professors and IES tutors. Wednesday afternoon and Fridays are reserved for local field trips and excursions related to course material.

The IES program takes responsibility for transcripts as well as for the logistics relating to the student visa (Aufenthalterlaubnis) and city registration (Einwohnermeldepflicht). The Baden-Württemberg student category of international students with no terminal degree (Bachelor Abschluss im Ausland) opens up a large selection of courses in all university departments.

The academic program officially ends at the end of June.  Students who take courses at the university through direct enrollment or those who choose to do an academic internship may extend their stay until the end of July. Previous internships have taken place at various locations including at local theaters and hospitals.

Housing and Student Life in Freiburg

Students are assured housing with other local students. A typical dorm includes a single room and IES provides the pillow, sheets, comforter, and towels that students do not return at the end of their stay as well as a shared kitchen and balcony. Students in the various programs are typically housed within the same dorm. Language Area studies students are housed in a dorm with regularly enrolled students providing more exposure to the German language.

All students receive student IDs giving them access to all of the university's facilities including the cafeteria, library, fitness and sport facilities as well as a public transportation pass.
